Hadith Explained: "Actions Are Judged by Intentions" article cover

Imam al-Bukhari opened his collection with this hadith, and Imam an-Nawawi made it the first of his Forty Hadith. Scholars call it one third of Islam.

What it means

Allah looks at why we act, not only at what we do. The same action can be worship or mere habit depending on the intention behind it.

إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ، وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى

“Actions are only by intentions, and every person will have only what they intended.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari 1, Sahih Muslim 1907
