Ijazah (إجازة) literally means "permission". In Quran study it is a certificate from a qualified teacher confirming that you recite with correct Tajweed and are allowed to pass that recitation on to others.
Where the Ijazah comes from
For centuries Muslims learned the Quran mouth to mouth: a student recited the whole Quran to a teacher, who had recited it to his teacher, back to the Prophet ﷺ. The Ijazah records that this chain was completed with you.
وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا
“And recite the Quran with measured, beautiful recitation.”
What you need before starting
An Ijazah is not a beginner course. You should already read fluently and know the main Tajweed rules. Many students first complete our Tajweed classes before joining the Ijazah track.
- Fluent reading of the Mushaf
- Solid Tajweed rules
- Patience for a full recitation from Al-Fatiha to An-Nas

Can you earn it online?
Yes. Because the Ijazah depends on listening and correction, a live one-to-one video class works exactly like sitting in front of the teacher. Learn more on our Learn Quran Online page.
