The Quran was preserved in writing and in hearts. The Sanad is the human side of that preservation: a named list of teachers, each of whom heard the Quran from the one before.
How the chain works
Your teacher recited to a teacher, who recited to another, generation after generation, back to the Companions and the Prophet ﷺ. The Ijazah certificate lists these names.
الإِسْنَادُ مِنَ الدِّينِ، وَلَوْلَا الإِسْنَادُ لَقَالَ مَنْ شَاءَ مَا شَاءَ
“The chain of narration is part of the religion; without it, anyone could say whatever they wished.”
Why it matters
Some details of recitation — the exact length of a Madd or the sound of a heavy letter — are learned only by listening. The Sanad guarantees they were passed on accurately.

Learning with a Sanad online
Distance does not break the chain: what matters is that you recite and the teacher listens and corrects. Ask about our Ijazah track or start on the Learn Quran Online page.
